Awesome construction and Class "A" workmanship. Simple to put together
(1.5 hrs) and is pretty much self explanatory when assembling. I got mine on a Thursday , up and running on Friday. Antenna is 55 feet and I put it up myself! Very light but strong. Signals jumped 3 to 4 "S" units compared to my taken down my Cushcraft MA5B. Great antenna!  Thanks Tennadyne.

Happy camper here !!  I have enclosed a copy of my review I posted on

Thanks for a great antenna !!!

This antenna has me well pleased indeed. I put it up after retiring a Cushcraft A3 antenna. I can tell a big difference between the two antennas. The improvement was like going from a flashlight to a laser beam!! When I turn it to the side I can almost tune out the received signal. Front to back ratio is good as well. I am very happy with this antenna. I have been busting pileups on the first call with 100 watts. No traps! No moving parts! No sun damaged control cables to replace. Work 5 bands 20 thru 10 meters. Under $700.00 includes shipping. A well made strong no maintenance antenna. A blast to put together. The owner of the company answers the phone. That’s a new twist!! Like Lee Iacocca said "If you can buy a better antenna for the money buy it!"

Many thanks for a great performing antenna. First thing I ever put up in the air that the XYL said looked good.

I run about 95% QRP/Solar Power and for the most part, if I can hear them, I can work them. It was money well spent.

DE N9XAW

Today we had a nasty little storm front move through.  Weather alert sirens were going off everywhere. Gusts of 60 mph were recorded.
My Tennadyne looked like it was trying to fly flapping in the high winds.
As tree limbs came down and power lines fell, the Tennadyne held in there.
Later when the storm passed and the sun returned, the tennadyne shined brightly as ever against the blue sky. It seemed to say "is that all you can do" to the passing clouds. Earlier in the winter months I was very nervous when it was coated with ice and drooped like a donkey's ears. It shook it off with no ill effects.

It truly is aluminum with an attitude.

Thanks again.

Subject: Installation and performance of new T12

The T-12 is really a very strong piece of work. The double boom gives the T-12 which is built to last and should make it through any type of storm that nature may throw your way. The elements fit exactly how they were meant to fit. I still find it hard to believe that Tennadyne could make so large of an antenna (30 ft. boom with 12 elements) less than 60 pounds.

On the receive end it is the best antenna I have ever used. I receive good readable signals that other stations cannot even copy or they copy them very weak. An example of this is yesterday morning a P29 station was coming in at 14.226.5 and all of the stations working him from Maine to Florida were giving him only a 53 signal report. I was receiving him on my T-12 at a 57 peaking 58. In short the receive on my T-12 is just fantastic, much better than I ever dreamed possible.

On transmit I get signals of 59 to 59+15 and 20 on only 100 watts. When I use power then My signal reports rise from 59+10 or 15 my signals rise to anywhere from 59+20 to 59+45 and that is all over the world including VK, JA, Russia and the whole of Europe. I assure you these are not inflated figures but actual signal reports from a multitude of DX stations.

I find the front to back equal to the T-12 specs and in most cases much better than 25 DB. I also find that the DB gain stated by Tennadyne is just to conservative. I feel my DB gain is closer to 7+ and not the 6+ as stated by Tennadyne.  The SWR is much better than Tennadyne told me to expect. On 20 mtrs. it is 1:1.3, on 17 mtrs. it is flat across the band. On 15 mtrs. it is flat across the band and on 12 mtrs. it is 1:1.2 and on 10 meters it again is flat across the band. This again exceeded my expectations.

The customer service is wonderful, the best I have ever run across from a major antenna producer. Roger was extremely helpful with advice and remedying a few problems. Because of assembly errors producing a few bad parts,  he sent me the parts I needed very quickly and cost free. I cannot complement Tennadyne and especially Roger for his patience and help.  I had a Force 12 yagi up for about a year and had continuing SWR problems. I adjusted the elements until there was no more adjusting left, I added and subtracted coax but still high SWR. I contacted Force 12 about 7 times and was not able to get a fix from them. They kept on telling me it was the environment the antenna was put up in or it was user error. I can say it was not user error. The last time I called them the same run-around so I said the hell with you and ordered my Tennadyne T-12. I now can go to any of the 5 bands and the power on my Icom 765 will not decline due to high SWR. I do live in a hostile environment for antennas, large 55 ft. Oak trees on either side of the T-12 and just a foot or so clearance from the longest element. I have 2 metal outbuildings in my back yard and 2 more in each of the neighbors back yards. I also have a huge water storage tank about a third of a mile south west of my tower. As you can well see the SWR on my T-12 is excellent on all bands.

Would I buy this antenna again if something happens to this one? Yes, I would replace it in a heartbeat with a replacement Tennadyne T-12. My antenna is on a hazer up 55 feet. I would recommend a Tennadyne to anyone without reservations whatsoever.  First study than follow the instructions to the letter and your new Tennadyne will work as well as mine does.

To: Charles Brainard
Sent: Monday, March 31, 2003 1:00 PM

Hi Chuck,

I took Friday off work and finished assembling the T8. I found the manual to be easy to follow, and as with most HF antennas, it takes a few hours to assemble, but I could assemble one now in half that time now that I understand how it all goes together. If you understand the theory behind an LPDA, it's kinda hard to mess it up. The only assembly problem I had was that one of the boom mount nuts galled (or froze or something) as I was putting it on and I ended up cutting that bolt and getting a replacement at the hardware store.

My co-worker George, K8QM, came over at lunchtime and we began the process of removing my Force12 C4 and putting up the T8 in its place. The whole process, from unpacking the box to the finished result is documented at:
http://www.pobox.com/~doughall/Antenna in case you're interested. You've probably seen enough installations to last the rest of your life. Anyway, we finished up around 5PM Friday.

Chuck, I could kick myself for not buying one of these years ago! (To borrow from the vegetable juice commercial: "I could have had a T8!") 12 and 17m are like whole new bands now. I played around on the bands over the weekend and was amazed at the performance. It's better than my Force 12 C4 in every way - there is no comparison. My third QSO was late in the evening on 15m SSB when I worked 6N0YO in Korea. Nobody else was going back to him, and you'd have thought the band was dead. Other highlights over the weekend include a 30 minute ragchew with VK2BA on 10m AM with 25 watts, and a 30+ minute ragchew with NH6I on Maui on 17m yesterday afternoon. I had no less than three people to tell me yesterday on 17m "You're the loudest signal on the band today."

No regrets, except now I wonder if I should have considered the T10 or the T12. No doubt that I'll buy one of them one of these days. An LPDA is the only way to go.

Don't miss much in the way of DX with the IC775 Barefoot... but if I need to beam over the QRM factory of Europe a little help from my 922 says its not long before I hear G0IAS 59...!! its helped me keep my scheds with the 7Q's I manage without any problem....I just can't praise the antenna enough....Thanks once again.... IF for any reason I ever need to replace this T8... it will be with a T12.... Regards and best wishes... Keep making those super LP's... I'm trying to get 5Z4FM to spend some money..... Chuck,

Just wanted to drop you a note about my newly installed T8. I have had it up for two months now, all I can say is, WOW! I finally found out how much fun HF really is when you can hear those weak, rare stations. I cannot say enough about the antenna. Assembly took about four hours, good friend and fellow ham KB2NQW (George) helped me out on Sunday, we started about noon and had it on the tower by 4 that afternoon. SWR is no greater than 1.5:1.

The thing that has impressed me is the fact that I can run low power, 100 watts, and get such great signal reports, which helps out the neighbors and chance of TVI complaints. I have a good friend in Parksville, BC, VE7JH (Harry), that I talked to every night on 17 or 20 with my super loop wire. I have always had good reports from Harry, but when the bands get bad he can barely copy me. Since I installed the T8, we have never missed a QSO and when the bands are out, we still have Q5 copy.

Harry uses your T10 LP, and has had his up for many years now. Harry was instrumental in having me choose the T8, and he was right. As a Radio Officer in the Canadian Navy doing several tours in the Antarctic at listening posts, he has tried them all, and will use only the TENNADYNE T10.

Thanks again for building such a great antenna.

After 6 months of using your T-6 antenna, I can say that is everything you said it was. I have had nothing but good results with it and brag on it's performance to the point of being obnoxious! If I ever need another antenna, it will surely be a log periodic from Tennadyne. By far the best antenna out there.

I have enclosed a few pictures of my "stealth" installation, due to the XYL's lack of appreciation of a tower and antenna's natural beauty. :)  BTW, the tower is 40' tall.

Subject: T6 comments

Chuck,

I've been meaning to write and tell you what a great antenna the T-6 is. It took me much longer than expected to get the antenna installed -- no fault of the antenna -- I just didn't want to rush it and most of the time was spent making a "tilt" base for a Force 12 crank up tower. In any case, I've been having a ball with the T-6. The first day it was up, I was making DX contacts with ease. I can't say I was busting pileups into Africa (from the Pacific Northwest, that's not easy) however, if it's Europe of the Pacific it's remarkable how good it is -- one or two calls and I'm in (this is with a 100 watts). The maximum height of the tower is only 42 feet, and so far I've been working with the antenna at about 35 feet, just getting used to what the tower can stand in our breezy weather. Even at this modest height, it's been absolutely outstanding. For instance; yesterday we had a good 6 meter F2 opening into the northeast.... I worked more FN grids in 20 minutes than I've worked in 2 seasons with my M2 6 meter beam... same afternoon I worked my first JA on 6 meters... and 10 minutes later I worked Mongolia on 12 meters, a few minutes later a ragchew with TF8GX in Greenland... today I picked up 14 more JA's on 6 meters. Yes, I know the T-6 isn't spec'd for 6 meters, but it doesn't seem to know it. In the process of checking the SWR, I noticed it's very low on 2 meters, (1.4:1)... so I have to try that next just for grins.

(TENNADYNE: This is often the case with all of our HF LPs, however, it's
nothing that can be guaranteed and so we don't promote it. The pattern on 6
& 2M will tend to be heart-shaped, more so on 2m.)

The assembly of the antenna is such a pleasure. It's very logical and would be difficult to mess up unless you get elements in the wrong place -- having built a log before, I knew what it should look like. In any case, it's very refreshing to put together an assembly of close tolerance parts with no surprises. (Several times I wondered how you get such round holes in the booms -- especially the larger diameter ones. I know this isn't an easy task and it's very critical). I had only two holes that needed to be enlarged (elongated). In each of the boom splices, one of the holes did not align between the angle slice and the square tube. It was the same hole in each assembly -- even allowing the parts to stay loose until all the fasteners were started, the hole would not align. Not a big deal -- just thought you might want to know.

Last but not least -- the antenna really looks good. Maybe this isn't normal ham criteria, however I'm very pleased with the appearance and the XYL agrees. You might remember I asked you whether it's okay to have the parts chromated, well they turned out beautiful. Before I sent everything to the plater, I grained every part with Scotchbrite; I used a lathe to finish the elements and a random axis sander on the booms. Also installed a PL259 mating connector on the bottom of the boom like we discussed. I'll try and get a decent picture of the antenna and email you one if it comes out okay.

Bottom line... a very happy camper here.

Subject: Wow! T-6 @ 50'

As a previous owner of a T-10 for six years or so, when I moved, I wanted to go smaller, so I bought a T-6. It is up at 50' on a Rohn HDBX-48 self supporting tower, mounted with a 1.92 inch .145 wall aluminum mast from Glenn Martin Engineering. It is mounted about 18 inches above the top of the tower. I have had it up two weeks and have dabbled a bit with it, but this morning was my first serious work with the antenna.

Among the nicer catches over the last several days, nearly all first call:
3d2cy 10m
9h3q 20m
wh2dx 10m
zk1etw 20m
vu2wap 20m long path
t77c 10m
7x4an 15m
3d2cy 15m
ah7u 10m
9g1uw 17m
fo0deh 15m
zb2jo 12m
xx9tep 15m
5n2bhf 10m
hv0a 10m
9k2hn 10m

Nearly all these were in pileups...the 9k2 was huge and said I was running 10 dB over S-9. Propagation was obviously good. The VSWR is, of course not as good as the T-10, but the actual performance is amazingly similar. If I believed in magic, I would say there is something very special about Log Periodic antennas. The antenna seems to perform better than it's gain and height would indicate...but that is very unscientific, and I would never make that kind of claim in public.

What I can say is this is a MARVELOUS antenna. It is built beautifully and what a wonder. I'm running the antenna with an Ameritron ALS-600 Power MOSFET amp. (I have had it for many years). The amp has SWR/Load Fault protection and I find to run full power on 18 mhz, I have to put the tuner in line. I'm seeing about a 2:1 vswr on that band. Most other bands it is less than 2:1....down around 1.5 to 1.7: 1. The feedline is 110' of LMR-400. I can find nothing to complain about ....I did double-nut the shorting stub, instead of unassembling the existing nuts. I also used your balun.

I am sooooo glad I went with the T-6 instead of something bigger. I loved my T-10, but now I can feel fairly confident that things will stay up even in big storms. It is a beautiful thing to behold perched above our A FRAME home. I hung a 40m inverted V just below (maybe 3 or 4 feet) the antenna and can find no SWR interaction when I rotate the antenna on 15m (full 360 degrees). F/B is very good on DX stations. I will be making some mearurements with a calibrated attenuator when I have time. 9K2HN is 59+10 off the front and about 5x4 to 5x6 off the back on 10m. No S-meter can be trusted, so I wouldn't read too much into this, except, it obviously has a reasonable F/B...and that's all I care about. High Angle arrival signals on 20m and 10m have virtually no F/B and that is to be expected.

Again, thanks for producing such a well constructed, easy to assemble, STERLING PERFORMER. This is soooo much fun! 73 p.s., and the price is downright reasonable!

Hi, Chuck. I finally got a digital camera so I could send you some photos.  I'm going to send three. Sorry if this is too much, but I wanted you to see the final install at the shack. I'm really having fun with this antenna. It's doing all I expected and more. Usually no more than two tries on DX contacts and I get in. It really brings in the signals -- more than I've ever heard before. It's only up 55 feet -- that's plenty.

Thanks again,
Dan

Hi, Chuck!

It has been just about five months since I installed my Tennadyne T-8 antenna.
To say that I am totally satisfied is an understatement, this is one fantastic antenna!

The antenna assembled perfectly, the first time, following the detailed instructions that you provided. I was amazed at the precision of the assembly and the rugged construction of the antenna. After completing the assembly, I set the T-8 on a couple of saw horses in the backyard to double check the connections and to check the VSWR. To my surprise I found that the antenna was nearly perfectly flat (<1.2:1) on 10, 12, 17, and 20 meters, and only 1.8:1 on 15 meters. While still sitting on the saw horses I gave a call on 10 meters and was greeted with a S9+20 from Finland! Rather surprising considering that the antenna was only 2 1/2 feet above the ground!

Since installing the T-8 on my 50' tower the results have remained the same, almost a perfect match on all the bands! So low I don't even bother with the antenna tuner on any band other than 15 meters. The signal reports consistently start with "S9+..."! Many contacts have been very surprised when I tell them I am running "barefoot" with only 100 watts.

Needless to say I am very pleased with the performance of the T-8! It is everything I had hoped it to be, plus more. Thanks for a great product!

Hi, Chuck,

The enclosed snapshot is for your collection of very satisfied customer replies. The T8 went together easily and I enjoyed doing the project. Not so with the Glen Martin 50 foot tower and Hazer but that is another story.

Based on my long experience with previous commercial beams, I was prepared to do some tweaking, probably the shorting stub, to reduce SWR. That was unnecessary as the SWR is 1.3:1 to 1:1 all across the five bands.

Granted that we are enjoying great propagation at the peak of Cycle 23, I am more than pleased with my ability to bust DX pile-ups using the TENNADYNE T8.

It has been a real pleasure doing business with you, Chuck.  I hope that we can have a QSO in the future.

In March of 2000 it was my privilege to be part of an effort by many hams to rescue Willem van Tuijl.   Willem was a victim of piracy on the high seas off the coast of Honduras.  He had received a very serious gunshot wound at the hands of those pirates. His father, Jacco, KH2TD was alone on his sailboat motoring toward shore—a very long trip—after his wounded son and his wife were taken off the boat by Honduran authorities.  Willem was taken to Porto Limpera where local doctors evaluated his condition and were unable to help him.  I contacted Jacco on his sailboat and offered my help.  My signal was very strong.  He didn’t know where his son and wife were—nor did he know what his son’s condition was.

A United States medevac helicopter was sent to pick up mother and son to transport them to La Ceiba, Honduras where medical facilities were much better.  I (with the help of the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa) called the hospital in La Ceiba and was able to phonepatch Jacco and his wife Janni together.  Willem was in emergency surgery at that time.

Over the next three days I maintained contact with Jacco on his boat and in La Ceiba when he arrived there through the kind assistance of Hector, HR3HGB. I was able to co-ordinate the efforts to transport Willem via hospital jet to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where he underwent further treatment.  Willem survived. Throughout this ordeal my signal was consistently S9+ 10 to 20 dB.

Chuck—the Tennadyne T-8 Log Periodic that I am using played a very important role in rescuing this young man.  Many times Jacco told me that he was unable to hear anyone else but me.  I know that if I had been using an inferior antenna I would not have been able to perform the tasks required.  I was happy to see that my tower with the T-8 on top was filmed and made it to the 20/20 segment that dealt with this incident. It’s a great antenna. It’s the best directional multi-band HF antenna I’ve ever owned—and I’ve owned three and four element tribanders of several manufacturers—quads—you name it.  It has survived 85-MPH winds with no damage at 70 feet.

You should be proud of a great design.  It works.

Chuck:

Having an antenna with significant gain has opened up another aspect of the hobby for me: QRP DXing. Last night I worked California from here in Minnesota with 1 watt, EA8 with 3 watts, and KH5 with 5 watts. Which means I have 3 contacts that all qualify for the 1000 miles per watt award, and 3 continents for QRP WAC.

Thanks again for a great antenna.

Subject: T12 at 90 ft. on new Tower

Hi, Chuck...

I just wanted to send you an update about my T12, and to thank you for sending the upgrade to the mast mounting assy.  It seems to work fine (the new bracket) and looks a lot sturdier than the old one.  As you may know, I "temporarily" installed my T12 last November (during our first winter snow-storm, I might add) at 60 ft on my Rohn tower.  I had rotator problems all winter, due to a bad selsyn transmitter, and never quite knew exactly where the antenna was pointing (unless I put my head outta the window).

I was amazed at the antenna's performance.  I use a Yaesu FT-1000MP, and I was totally impressed with the antenna's ability to "hear" weak signals and then make QSO's with them.

Well, I finally got my new tower up two weekends ago.  It's a Titan T300-88 and the T12 is now sitting at 90 ft.   Boy!  What a boomer this is proving to be.  And what a beautiful toy to look at.  I've enclosed a photo of it, and hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do.

But, the real pleasure is using it.  I've been able to measure front to back on the antenna, and on 20 meters it is on the order of 25+ db!!!   Better than that on the higher frequencies.  With no guy wires to interfere with the pattern the antenna seems to play really well.  I'm quite impressed.

Thanks for the upgrade, and for the antenna.  I'm doubt I'll ever go back to a trapped yagi!

Dear Tennadyne,

I just wanted to drop you a note regarding the performance of my T-6 log periodic antenna.

I live in SE Wyoming, where the wind and winter conditions demand a durable antenna. After researching several Yagi designed antennas, I decided to purchase a T-6 because of the single feedline and the lack of traps. I found this multiband log periodic to be an outstanding performer.

I used my 3 element tri-bander for comparison. The T-6 averaged 1-3 S-units louder in receive and 1-4 S-units better in signal reports from around the world.

Due to it's size, I found the 12 foot boom of the T-6 much easier to tower mount than the tribander with a longer and heavier presence. The slim elements of the T-6 were much easier to negotiate up the tower than the 'heavier tribander elements with the traps.

The SWR was a big surprise. At 25 feet, the match averaged 2:1; but when I mounted it on top of my 50 foot tower, the match was 1:1.3-5 throughout the band. The tribander SWR curves were much sharper and did not allow me to have a good match from end to end of the amateur bands like " the T-6 allowed.

The best news is how the antenna survived a steady 60 MPH north wind that gusted up to and over 80 MPH at times. The elements swayed back but held together. The next morning, the antenna had no signs of damage although my ground-mounted vertical was bent over and ruined.

It is great having such a big gun antenna in a small package. Enclosed, please find photos of the T-6 at sunset.

I've asked you questions at one point or another over the last year or so.   I just wanted you to know that Matt Strelow, KC1XX and his company XX Towers installed a tower for me a week ago, and installed a T-10 antenna for me.

The performance of the T-10 has been outstanding.  I've gotten great reports from many folks, and have worked many new DXCC locations.  In some cases these were locations I'd never even been able to hear before, let alone work.

A few nights ago a number of folks from our local club were on 20 meters talking with club members who moved to Texas.  N1LN and N1YXU had just installed a tower and a T-10 as well, and we had a great time comparing antennas and signal strengths.   The two T-10 antennas worked fabulously.  We had S9 noise on the band, and both T-10s provided the gain to result in 20-over signals, using 100 watts at each end.

Thanks for making a great product.
